How We Hear

The ear has three main parts: the external ear, the middle ear and the inner ear. Sounds travel through the ear canal to the eardrum. The eardrum and three small middle-ear bones transmit sound vibrations to the inner ear, where they are converted into electrical signals and transmitted to the brain.

The chain of small bones in the middle ear is called the ossicles. The bone nearest the inner ear is the stapes. Otosclerosis is an abnormal growth of bone around the stapes that can restrict its movement and cause conductive hearing loss.

OTOSCLEROSIS

Otosclerosis can run in families, although having the condition does not necessarily mean a person’s children will develop it. It can also affect the hearing nerve. Treatment depends on the type and degree of hearing loss.

STAPEDECTOMY

Stapedectomy is a surgical procedure used to improve hearing in appropriate patients with otosclerosis. During surgery, the fixed stapes is removed and replaced with a prosthesis that transmits sound vibrations to the inner ear.

The amount of hearing improvement depends in part on the condition of the hearing nerve. Some patients may achieve hearing within the normal range, while others may continue to benefit from a hearing aid after surgery.
